It
is a large city located at a distance of 28 kms from
the Indo-Pak border. The town was founded by Guru Ram
Das, the fourth guru of the sikhs, in 1579, on landed
gifted by the Mughal Emperor Akbar. Guru Arjan Dev,
the fifth Sikh guru completed the project and built
a temple in the midst of a pool. In 1803, Maharaja Ranjit
Singh got the lower half of the temple covered with
marble and the upper half with copper and then with
pure gold leaf. Since then the temple has become known
as Swarn Mandir or the Golden Temple which is very sacred
to the Sikhs. The town takes its name from the pool
known as Amritsar. Another temple of considerable importance
is the Durgiana Mandir. The Jallianwala Bagh is an important
place connected with the Freedom strugle.
