The
place derives its name from Baba Fateh Singh, the younger
of the two martyred sons of Guru Gobind Singh and also
on account of the fateh ( victory ) which Baba Banda
Singh Bahadur later scored over Sirhind. A memorial
with the name of Fatehgarh Sahib was raised in 1710
during the days of Banda Bahadur over the remains of
the Fort where the two martyrs are said to have been
bricked alive. The town is an important place of pilgrimage
for the Sikhs. A big fair is held here annually from
11th to 14th Poh of the Bikrami calendar ( generally
from 25th to 27th of December ) to commemorate the martyrdom.
The main centre of attraction is the magnificient Gurudwara
Shri Fatehgarh Sahib. An underground cell ( Bhora Sahib
) under the main Gurudwara shows the wall made of small
bricks in which the two martyrs are believed to have
been bricked alive. On one side of the Gurudwara is
a memorial in the shape of a platform where six thousand
Sikh soldiers of Banda Bahadur who lost their lives
in the battle of Chapparchiri leading to the capture
of Sirhind are believed to have been cremated.
